The Lok Sabha has passed the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026, with the objective of strengthening India’s judicial system and reducing the backlog of pending cases in the Supreme Court. Under the new amendment, the sanctioned strength of the Supreme Court will increase from 34 to 38 judges, including the Chief Justice of India (CJI). Presenting the bill in Parliament, Union Minister for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal stated that the expansion would help ensure faster disposal of cases and improve the overall efficiency of the judiciary. The government believes this measure will significantly accelerate the resolution of pending legal matters while enhancing access to timely justice across the country.
