High Court Orders Company to Pay ₹1.16 Crore in Compensation

Guwahati: In a significant ruling, the Gauhati High Court has directed the National Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited to compensate a local landowner for damage caused to his property during the construction of National Highway-29. The court observed that depriving a citizen of the beneficial use of his property amounts to a clear violation of fundamental rights.

The petitioner, a resident of Kohima, had approached the court alleging that excavation and soil cutting carried out for widening NH-29 into a four-lane highway triggered landslides in his area, resulting in substantial damage to his land and the felling of 80 trees. Taking note of the impact, the court ordered the company to pay compensation of ₹1.16 crore.
