- Satheesan Cabinet Balances Caste, Religion, and Regional Representation
- Alliance Partners Receive Representation in the UDF Government
New Delhi: After returning to power in Kerala following a decade-long gap, the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) government has formed a cabinet under the leadership of Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan that political observers are describing as a “model of social engineering.” On Monday, V.D. Satheesan took oath as Chief Minister at the Central Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram, while 20 other ministers were also sworn in alongside him.
In the 21-member cabinet, the Congress party has strategically aimed to maintain a balance among caste groups, religious communities, and regional interests. Out of the total ministers, 11 belong to the Congress quota, while alliance partner Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has been allotted five ministerial positions. In addition, various factions of Kerala Congress and the Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) have also been given representation in the government.
The Satheesan administration has paid particular attention to social representation within the cabinet. The ministry includes 9 Hindu, 6 Muslim, and 5 Christian leaders. By giving representation to four leaders from the influential Nair community, including Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan himself, Congress appears to be targeting upper-caste Hindu voters. At the same time, leaders from the Ezhava community and other backward classes have also been inducted into the cabinet, signaling the party’s intention to strengthen its support base among OBC communities. Leaders from the Dalit community, including A.P. Anil Kumar and K.A. Thulasi, have also been included in the cabinet.
