Ashwin Demands Change in DRS Dead Ball Rule

Chennai: Former cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin has once again raised concerns over the dead ball rule under the Decision Review System (DRS) following Punjab Kings’ defeat against Mumbai Indians in the IPL. According to Ashwin, Punjab suffered because of the current interpretation of the rule, and he believes it should be amended immediately.

During the final over of Punjab Kings’ innings, Mumbai Indians fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah delivered the last ball to Vishnu Vinod, striking him on the pads. The on-field umpire instantly declared the batter out. Vinod immediately opted for a review, and after examining the replays, the TV umpire overturned the original decision and ruled him not out.

However, since the on-field umpire had initially given the batter out, the ball had already been declared dead. As a result, Punjab Kings were not awarded the leg-bye run that could have been taken during the play. Ashwin strongly questioned this interpretation of the dead ball rule, arguing that it unfairly disadvantages teams in crucial moments.
