DRDO carries out successful flight test of smart anti airfield weapon

DRDO made another milestone when it successfully carried out a successful ‘Captive and Release’ flight test of the indigenously built Smart Anti Airfield Weapon (SAAW) some off the Odisha coast on 21 January. The test was conducted through the Hawk-I aircraft of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). This smart weapon was successfully tested with the Indian Hawk-MK 132 aircraft manufactured at HAL. SAWW’s test was the ninth in a series of successful tests conducted by DRDO so far. It was a text book test that achieved all its goals. The telemetry and tracking system installed at the Interim Testing Base (ITR) at Balasore captured all the views of the mission on camera. The smart anti-airfield weapon is designed and developed by DRDO’s Hyderabad Research Center building (RCI) indigenously. It is a 125 kg weight class smart weapon that can target enemy’s airfield assets such as radars, bunkers, taxi tracks and runways from a distance of 100 km. Its high-accuracy guided bombs also weigh less than other weapons systems of this category. The weapon has been successfully tested by Jaguar aircraft before.
