Mumbai police have arrested 9 people, including 6 women, while exposing a gang buying and selling newborns. The arrested accused are a doctor, a nurse and a lab technician. According to the Crime Branch of Mumbai Police, this gang used to buy children from poor parents for Rs 60 thousand to one lakh and sell them for Rs 2 to 3 lakh.
Investigations so far have revealed that 4 children have been sold in 6 months. Police suspect that the number of children sold may be higher. Police have also found photos of children and WhatsApp chat in the mobile phone recovered from the accused. A case has been registered against the arrested accused under IPC and Juvenile Justice Act.
Police had come to know about the gang woman that a woman living in Bandra East is doing business of selling children. Investigations revealed a woman named Rukhsar Sheikh who had recently sold a baby girl. After questioning him, it was found that Shah Jahan Jogilkar had sold his child to a family in Pune through Rupali Verma. The police first detained Rukhsar, Shah Jahan and Rupali. Then one by one doctors, nurses, technicians were also caught.
According to the police, doctors, nurses and technicians used to talk to their patients and identify the needy and helpers and inform the agents. The agents then settled the deal.
