Procurement of 83 light combat aircraft Tejas MK-1A and 10 Tejas MK-1 trainer aircraft for the Indian Air Force was approved. It will cost Rs 45696 crore, which includes the expenditure of Rs 1202 crore for the design and development of the infrastructure. It may be noted that the Light Combat MK-1A variant is a modern generation fighter plane designed, developed and manufactured indigenously. It is made by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, Bangalore.
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh gave information related to the purchase of Tejas by tweeting. He said that the light combat aircraft Tejas is going to be the cornerstone of the fighter fleet of the Indian Air Force in the coming years. Tejas includes new technologies, many of which have never been attempted in India.
Tejas, a light combat aircraft, is equipped electronically with facilities such as scan radar, Beyond Vijull Range Missile, Electronic Warfare Suite and Air to Air Refueling for critical operation capability. Currently it is 50 percent indigenous which will later increase to 60 percent. This order will give impetus to self-sufficient campaign.
