When is Krishna Janmashtami, 15 or 16 August?

According to the Panchang, the Ashtami Tithi of Bhadrapada month will start at 11:49 pm on August 15 and will end at 9:34 pm on August 16. This year Janmashtami will be celebrated on both days. However, according to beliefs, Udayatithi is recognized. Therefore, fasting and worship will be done on Udaya Tithi; that is, this year the festival of Shri Krishna Janmashtami will be celebrated on 16 August, Saturday.

Auspicious time and worship time

Lord Krishna was born at midnight. This year Nitisha Muhurta will be from 12:04 pm to 12:47 pm on August 16, and the worship of Shri Krishna will be completed in this period. The Dahi Handi festival will also be celebrated during the day on August 16, followed by fasting until 5:51 AM on August 17.

Krishna Janmashtami Puja Vidhi

  • First of all, clean the house and the place of worship and maintain purity.
  • After this, take a bath and wear clean clothes and take a vow to fast.
  • Place Lord Laddu Gopal’s idol or picture on a stool draped with a white or yellow cloth.
  • You can also keep Laddu Gopal in a swing or cradle.
  • Make the place of worship beautiful with flowers, lamps, toran, rangoli, and peacock feathers.
  • Anoint Lord Krishna with Panchamrit (milk, curd, ghee, honey, and Ganga water).
  • After anointing, bathe him with clean water, then dress him in clean clothes.
  • Decorate him with flowers, tilak, and jewelry; apply sandalwood; and offer flowers and Tulsi leaves.
  • Offer butter-sugar, fruits, sweets, and panjiri to Shri Krishna.
  • Perform the Janmotsav puja and aarti at midnight, ringing the conch and bells.
  • After Aarti, recite Bhajans, Kirtans, and the Leelas of Lord Krishna.
  • After the Puja, end the fast by consuming sweets, fruits, and Bhog Prasad.
  • The fast should be broken at the auspicious time of the next day.
