Throat Irritation and Swelling Caused by Increased Kapha Dosha

Lifestyle

New Delhi. During the winter season, the Kapha dosha tends to increase, leading to throat irritation and swelling. Experts state that throat discomfort can be relieved through simple home-based and natural remedies. In winter, the dry air causes the mucous layer of the throat to dry out, increasing the risk of viral infections.

Similarly, sitting in front of heaters further reduces throat moisture, while exposure to cold morning air and the consumption of very hot or cold beverages can aggravate inflammation. Ayurveda recommends several remedies that help balance Kapha and provide warmth and moisture to the throat. Among these, a paste made from asafoetida (hing) and honey is considered highly effective. The antiviral properties of asafoetida help loosen Kapha and reduce throat irritation.

Drinking a decoction prepared by boiling rock sugar (mishri), fennel seeds, and black raisins (kali munakka) helps keep the throat moist and reduces swelling. Gargling with lukewarm water mixed with turmeric and crushed cloves is also beneficial. The curcumin present in turmeric helps reduce inflammation, while cloves provide relief from throat pain and soreness.
