New Delhi: Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic candidate for the post of Mayor of New York City, sparked controversy after making a statement against Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a gurdwara. Mamdani alleged that Modi and the Indian government are following a policy of violence against minorities.
He further claimed that Mayor Eric Adams has made life in the city extremely expensive while simultaneously strengthening ties with Prime Minister Modi and the Indian government, which, according to him, pursue policies of violence against minority communities.
According to media reports, Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi strongly objected to Mamdani’s remarks. She stated that while it is not India’s concern who the people of New York elect as their mayor, the comments made by Mamdani in a gurdwara are deeply disturbing. Questioning the intent behind his statement, she asked, “Who is writing Mamdani’s script—Gurpatwant Singh Pannun?”
This is not the first time Mamdani has been embroiled in controversy. A few days earlier, former U.S. President Donald Trump had accused him of having close ties with Islamic extremists.
