India’s homegrown navigation application, Mappls, is now emerging as a strong competitor to Google Maps. Union Minister for Railways and Communications Ashwini Vaishnaw lauded the app, highlighting its impressive features and encouraging people to give it a try.
Interestingly, only a few are aware that MapmyIndia, the parent company behind Mappls, was founded a full decade before Google Maps, in 1995. The company’s co-founder and chairman, Rakesh Verma, along with his wife, initially lived in the United States—where Rakesh worked with General Motors, and his wife was employed at IBM.
