A new model of livelihood and green employment emerges

Coimbatore In the forests of Tamil Nadu, the Lantana grass—once considered a serious threat to the environment—has now turned into a source of livelihood for local tribal communities. This is the same invasive grass that destroys native plants and is blamed for depleting groundwater levels. However, this so-called “enemy of forests” is now generating both green energy and employment opportunities.

According to media reports, in Shalavadi village located within the Hasur forest range, the head of the Tribal Mutual Association, Srikavidevan, has established the country’s first Lantana Fuel Factory. Local tribal workers collect the Lantana grass from the forests and bring it to the factory, where it is processed into briquettes—a form of solid fuel. These briquettes burn like coal but are available at a much lower cost. Speaking to the media, Srikavidevan explained, “Coal sells in the market for ₹9 per kilogram, while we sell Lantana briquettes for ₹8 per kilogram. This not only benefits the environment but also gives us a profit of ₹4–₹5 per kilogram.”

So far, over 500 tonnes of Lantana grass have been removed through this initiative, providing employment to more than 350 women.

Lantana Products Gaining Popularity

Beyond fuel, products made from Lantana grass are also gaining popularity in the market. In the Anamalai Tiger Reserve area of Coimbatore, local artisans are crafting furniture items such as sofas, chairs, and tables using this grass. These products are affordable, durable, and environmentally friendly.

According to forest department officials, this innovative model has not only created new employment opportunities for tribal communities but is also helping preserve biodiversity. Where Lantana grass once damaged the forest ecosystem, it is now illuminating the lives of the very communities that depend on those forests.
