New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee has taken a major step to enhance students’ preparation for placement interviews. The institute has launched a pilot project for an AI-powered mock interviewer named ‘Elevated’. Developed by Newton School, this tool aims to provide students with a realistic interview experience while offering detailed feedback on their performance.
Many engineering students, despite having strong academic records, often fail to clear interviews. According to data from the institute, around 70 percent of software candidates are unsuccessful in their first interview—not due to a lack of technical knowledge, but because of nervousness, low confidence, and limited exposure. ‘Elevated’ has been designed to bridge this gap. The tool conducts mock interview sessions modeled after the actual interview formats used by top companies such as Amazon, Google, Razorpay, and Cred.
The AI system analyzes each student’s responses, asks follow-up questions, and generates a comprehensive evaluation report. This report provides insights into various aspects such as communication style, confidence level, and technical thinking ability.
Professor Raj Kumar Datta, Head of IIT Roorkee’s Career Development Cell (CDC), stated that this initiative allows students to experience real interview pressure in a controlled environment. He noted that many technically proficient students tend to lose confidence during live interviews.
According to Newton School, ‘Elevated’ has been trained on over one lakh real interview interactions. The system is capable of conducting both short demo sessions and full-length mock interviews, helping students refine their performance and boost their confidence before facing real recruiters.
