E-buses to Arrive Within Minutes in Delhi — Facilities So Advanced That Commuters May Forget the Metro

Delhi

Delhi residents are set to receive a major gift in the New Year. Those weary of metro crowds will soon be able to travel conveniently in electric buses that will be available within minutes. The Transport Department has finalized the procurement of 5,000 e-buses, which are expected to be delivered by March 2026. According to officials, with the addition of these buses, Delhi will become the state with the largest fleet of electric buses in India.

So far, 25 bus depots have been fully electrified, and the remaining ones are scheduled to be ready within the next four months. This will expand Delhi’s e-bus fleet to over 5,000, making it the largest zero-emission bus network in the country.

At present, 3,400 buses operate across Delhi under the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and the Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System (DIMTS). The capital currently has 63 bus depots and 16 terminals, including 23 cluster depots and 40 under DTC.

Under the Delhi Electric Vehicle Policy 2020, the government aims to induct 10,480 buses by 2026, with approximately 80% (8,280) of them being e-buses. The electrification of depots is progressing rapidly. During festive seasons, the frequency of buses on less crowded routes has been reduced, while it has been increased on busy routes to accommodate demand.

Officials emphasize that these new e-buses will not only enhance public transport convenience but also significantly contribute to environmental sustainability. Once the entire fleet becomes operational, Delhi will stand among the leading regions in the world for clean, zero-emission public transport.
