Europe experienced a devastating heatwave during the final week of June, resulting in a sharp rise in fatalities across the continent. Between June 22 and June 28, an estimated 10,650 excess deaths were reported in 27 countries. More than 9,000 of those who died were aged 65 or older, making older adults the most vulnerable group. Experts found no other major contributing factor during this period, identifying the record-breaking temperatures as the primary cause of the increased mortality. France and Belgium were among the hardest-hit nations. Scientists warn that climate change is intensifying extreme heat events, increasing the likelihood of similar public health emergencies in the future.
