A federal court in the United States has dealt a major setback to the Trump administration’s immigration policy. The court ruled that a policy suspending immigrant visa processing for citizens of 75 countries was unlawful. Applicants from countries including Afghanistan, Brazil, Iran, Iraq, Nigeria, Somalia and Yemen were among those affected. The administration had argued that the measure was necessary to reduce the economic burden on the country and prevent possible misuse of government programs. However, the court found that restricting visa processing solely on the basis of nationality was unjustified. The government may appeal the ruling.
