MOSCOW: Russia’s military claimed on Thursday that it has achieved the complete “liberation” of Kupiansk, a vital railway hub in Ukraine’s eastern Kharkiv region, in what would mark a major strategic blow to Kyiv’s forces and a significant reversal of their past victories.
The announcement, which Ukrainian officials have denied, was delivered directly to President Vladimir Putin as he visited a military command post.Sergey Kuzovlev, a Colonel General commanding the western group of forces, reported on state television that his troops had finalized the capture of the city, describing it as a “key cog in Ukraine’s defences”.
