New Delhi. Bangladesh has tightened security ahead of a nationwide shutdown as the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) prepares to deliver its verdict in a case filed against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The case concerns alleged crimes against humanity during the student-led protests that took place between July and August 2024. Sheikh Hasina has denied all charges brought against her.
Tension has escalated across Bangladesh in the lead-up to the verdict. The Bangladesh Awami League, led by Sheikh Hasina, has announced a two-day shutdown beginning Sunday morning, disrupting daily life throughout the country. Traffic in the capital, Dhaka, remained lighter than usual, while reports emerged of firecrackers being set off in some areas.
Business leaders have voiced concern over the current political climate and expressed hope that the upcoming general elections will help restore stability in the nation.
