Bangkok: Under another successful humanitarian operation, the Government of India safely repatriated 270 Indian nationals from the city of Mae Sot in Thailand, including 26 women. These citizens had escaped from cyber fraud centers operating in Myanmar’s Myawaddy border region and reached Thailand. The operation was carried out by the Indian Embassy in Bangkok and the Consulate General of India in Chiang Mai, with the support of Thai authorities. The Indian Air Force deployed two special aircraft, which played a crucial role in bringing the citizens back home.
According to official sources, these Indian nationals had entered Thailand illegally from Myanmar and were subsequently detained by local authorities. They had been coerced into working for cyber fraud syndicates in Myanmar. The Indian Embassy, in coordination with agencies of the Royal Thai Government, ensured their safe repatriation. Many of these individuals were lured into these criminal networks through false promises of lucrative employment, only to be forced into online scams. In the “no-rule zones” of Myawaddy and surrounding areas, such transnational criminal groups continue to run organized cyber scam operations.
