Supreme Court Seeks Response on Limiting the Use of Aadhaar

New Delhi: While hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) concerning the use of Aadhaar, the Supreme Court has issued notices to the Central Government, state governments, Union Territories, the Election Commission, and the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), seeking their responses on the matter.

The petition argues that Aadhaar should be used solely as a proof of identity and not as evidence of citizenship, residence, date of birth, or address. According to the petitioner, the Aadhaar Act recognizes the document only for identity verification purposes. However, it is reportedly being accepted as proof for several other purposes in both government and private-sector processes.

The plea further alleges that loopholes in the Aadhaar enrollment process may be exploited by certain foreign nationals to obtain additional official documents. Taking note of these concerns, the Supreme Court has asked all concerned parties to submit detailed replies before the court proceeds further with the case.
