New Delhi. Two years ago, scientists had warned in a study that the Himalayan glaciers are melting very fast and large icebergs falling apart and falling can cause major disaster.
The study, published in June 2019 in the journal Science Advance, claimed that the Himalayan icebergs (glaciers) are melting twice as fast as temperatures rise. Due to this, crores of people from many countries, including India, may come under threat. Water supply may be affected in these areas. This information was found in a study of satellite images taken over 40 years in India, China, Nepal and Bhutan. It was found that the Himalayan glaciers are rapidly disappearing due to climate change.
According to the study, icebergs have lost a quarter of their size in four decades. Researchers attributed the rising temperature of the earth (global warming) to this. Scientists said that the temperature of different places is different. But it has been found to be one degree higher on average between the years 2000 and 2016 compared to the years 1975 to 2000.
Satellite photographs of about 650 icebergs spread over a range of 2,000 kilometers from west to east were studied. The change was clearly visible in the 3D photos of the US intelligence satellite. When the researchers matched the old photographs of photographs taken after the year 2000, it was revealed that during 1975 to 2000, 0.25 meters of snowfall of icebergs decreased every year. At the same time, it was found that due to the rise in temperature in the 1990s, it increased to half a meter per year.
