Hearing has started on Supreme Court taking suo motu cognition on pollution of Yamuna river. The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognizance of the pollution of river Yamuna. The court has also sought answers from the Center and Haryana in this matter. The Delhi Jal Board had alleged that contaminated water is being released into the Yamuna river from Haryana.
Court friend Meenakshi Arora said that on January 18, the water quality level was good, ammonia levels are also under control. If it is controlled then it can be better. Meenakshi Arora said that the NGT has formed a monitoring committee for the Yamuna river, its report should be seen by the court.
Haryana’s lawyer Shyam Dewan opposed the Delhi Jal Board’s petition. He said that the petition filed by Delhi Jal Board is not proper. Many things are disputed in the petition. Shyam Dewan said that the problems related to Yamuna pollution are within Delhi, not from Haryana. He said that no one wants pollution. Haryana is being presented as if Haryana is the root of the problem. The Supreme Court has given the Haryana government two weeks to file a response to the Delhi Jal Board’s petition.
Chief Justice of India SA Bobde, Justice AS Bopanna and Justice V. A bench of Ramasubramaniam heard a petition by the Delhi Jal Board alleging that Haryana was releasing contaminated water containing excessive amounts of ammonia into the Yamuna river, which, when mixed with chlorine, becomes carcinogenic.
The bench said that we are issuing notice without any debate. We are taking suo motu cognizance of pollution in entire Yamuna river. During the hearing on video conferencing, the bench appointed senior advocate Meenakshi Arora as amicus curiae in the matter.
