Dhaka: The results of Bangladesh’s recent general elections have clearly defined the country’s political trajectory. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by Tarique Rahman, has secured a historic and decisive victory with a two-thirds majority.
However, the spotlight during these elections was largely on Jamaat-e-Islami, which sought to position itself as a principal political force in the absence of the Awami League. Despite contesting on such a large scale for the first time, the party faced significant disappointment. Jamaat, which entered the electoral arena in alliance with 11 other parties, managed to secure only 68 seats. The outcome underscored its continued struggle to shed the burden of its hardline image, ultimately limiting its broader appeal among voters.
