Shooter Opened Fire Inside an Apartment Building
Moscow: A senior Russian military official, Lieutenant General Vladimir Alexeyev, was shot on Friday in Moscow and was immediately rushed to hospital, according to state media citing investigative agencies. Lieutenant General Alexeyev serves as the Deputy Chief of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Ministry of Defence, effectively holding the position of Deputy Defence Minister.
The attack comes amid a series of killings of senior Russian military officials in recent months, for which Russia has repeatedly blamed Ukraine. Svetlana Petrenko, spokesperson for the Investigative Committee, said that an unidentified assailant fired multiple shots at Lieutenant General Alexeyev inside an apartment building in the north-western part of Moscow. He was admitted to hospital in an injured condition.
Petrenko did not disclose who might be behind the attack. Vladimir Alexeyev has been serving as the First Deputy Head of Russia’s military intelligence agency since 2011.
