Dhaka: Marking the beginning of a new chapter in Bangladesh’s political history, voting for the general elections commenced today, Thursday. This is the country’s first general election since the widespread public unrest in August 2024 that led to the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government. Long queues of voters have been observed at polling stations since early morning. The voting process, which will continue until 4:30 p.m., is being regarded as the first genuinely competitive election since 2009, as it features a direct contest among the principal opposition parties in the absence of the ruling Awami League.
