Violent protests, arson, and stone-pelting in border areas; Indian tourists stranded
Araria: On the very first day of the New Year, the Laukahi area of Sunsari district along the India–Nepal border turned into a battleground. Following the death of a businessman, Vijay Sah, in an encounter between Nepal Police and smugglers, violent protests erupted across the border regions, accompanied by arson and stone-pelting.
The unrest led to severe disruption, leaving hundreds of Indian tourists—who had traveled to Nepal for New Year picnics—stranded across the border and facing significant hardship. The incident reportedly occurred late on the night of December 31.
