New Delhi: The Indian judiciary continues to face its most significant challenge in the form of an enormous case backlog running into crores. There is substantial pendency across subordinate courts, High Courts, and the Supreme Court nationwide. According to data as of 28 December 2025, a total of 54.1 million cases are pending across subordinate courts, High Courts, and the Supreme Court combined. Of these, 47.6 million cases are pending in subordinate courts alone. Among them, 36.5 million cases are criminal, while the rest pertain to civil matters.
