Dry Mouth and Reduced Saliva Are Caused by Imbalance of Vata, Pitta, and Agni

Lifestyle

New Delhi: People often believe that drinking water will relieve dryness of the mouth, but in many cases, even after consuming sufficient water, the mouth remains dry due to inadequate saliva production. In Ayurveda, this condition is known as Mukha Shosha (dry mouth). Saliva not only aids digestion but also plays an essential role in protecting the teeth, keeping the mouth moist, and preventing infections.

According to Ayurveda, dryness of the mouth and reduced saliva production are associated with an imbalance of Vata, Pitta, and Agni. During winter, the Vata dosha naturally increases, leading to greater dryness in the body. At the same time, the Pitta dosha enhances heat and irritation within the system. The combined imbalance of these two doshas along with Agni results in dry mouth and decreased saliva production, which can negatively affect digestion and overall health.

To alleviate this condition, Ayurveda recommends several simple and effective home remedies.
