Guwahati: Ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections in Assam, three sitting Congress MLAs—Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha, Shashikant Das, and Basant Das—joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The induction took place on Thursday in the presence of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Former Joint Secretary of the Indian National Congress, Parasha Bob Kalita, and former General Secretary of the All India Trinamool Congress, Kankan Nath, also joined the BJP during the event.
The Chief Minister clarified that these MLAs had been supporting the government for the past two years and have now formally joined the party without any conditions. Speaking to the media, he said that the entry of the three Congress legislators marks a significant day for the BJP. He added that the development reflects the party’s growing popularity and the respect people have for Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
