After the High Court’s intervention, Kejriwal finally allotted Lodhi Estate bungalow— Waited for over a year

New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) National Convenor and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has finally been allotted a Type-6 category government bungalow in Lodhi Estate. The allotment came after more than a year of waiting and a stern directive from the Delhi High Court. The residence located at 95, Lodhi Estate has now been officially assigned to him.

Kejriwal had vacated his official residence in September 2024 after resigning as Chief Minister and had since been staying at the government accommodation of AAP MP Ashok Mittal. Earlier, his residence on Flagstaff Road had been embroiled in the “Sheesh Mahal” controversy.

Although a policy allowing government accommodation for national party convenors has been in place since July 2014, bureaucratic delays led the matter to court. The High Court, seeking transparency in the allotment process, demanded a response from the Centre and warned that the procedure could not be arbitrary. The court also expressed displeasure when a bungalow earlier suggested for Kejriwal was allotted to someone else.

The Centre, on September 25, assured the court that the issue would be resolved within ten days. AAP has hailed this development as a victory of justice, while the opposition has questioned the Centre’s intent. The case has now sparked a broader debate over the policy governing government accommodations for national political leaders.
