New Delhi: Two drugs commonly used in the treatment of diabetes may help enhance brain health, according to a study conducted by the Wake Forest University School of Medicine in the United States. Experts suggest that these medications have the potential to reduce the effects of serious neurological disorders such as dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. They describe this discovery as a major breakthrough and a promising step toward the treatment of Alzheimer’s.
To assess the effects of these drugs, the research team conducted a clinical trial involving 47 participants aged between 55 and 85 years. Some participants were administered the diabetes drug empagliflozin, while others received insulin nasal spray.
The results showed a positive impact of both drugs on patients suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. The use of empagliflozin was found to lower brain injury markers in several participants and improve blood flow to the brain.
