Why Do Cyclones Occur Mostly in Winter? What’s the Connection Between Cyclones and Cold Weather?

Weather Report

New Delhi: A deep depression formed over the southeastern Bay of Bengal is gradually becoming active. An orange alert has been issued in Tamil Nadu due to the impending Cyclone Montha. In view of the cyclone threat, fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea.

This raises an important question — why do most cyclones occur during the winter season?

Experts explain that cyclones tend to form in winter because, despite the cooler air temperatures, the sea water remains relatively warm during this period. For a cyclone to develop, the surface temperature of the ocean needs to be around 26°C or higher. Warm water heats the air above it, causing it to rise and create a low-pressure area in the atmosphere. When this low pressure interacts with strong winds and moisture, it begins to rotate — eventually forming a cyclone.
