New Delhi: The Supreme Court has sought a response from the Central Government and the Ladakh administration on a petition challenging the detention of environmentalist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk. The petition was filed by Wangchuk’s wife, who described the action against him as arbitrary and unconstitutional.
The apex court has scheduled the next hearing for November 24. At present, Wangchuk is lodged in the Central Jail in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. He was arrested on September 26 under the National Security Act (NSA). His arrest came two days after violent protests erupted in Ladakh demanding statehood and inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. The demonstrations resulted in four deaths and over 90 injuries.
Authorities have accused Wangchuk of inciting the crowd and provoking violence, while his supporters maintain that he was peacefully advocating for environmental protection and constitutional rights. The court has now directed both the Centre and the Ladakh administration to submit detailed affidavits in response to the petition.
