Cricketing ties between India and Australia are set to grow stronger with a landmark development. During his visit to Australia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) that, for the first time, a match of the Big Bash League (BBL) will be hosted in India. The opening fixture of the 2026–27 BBL season is scheduled to take place in Chennai.
Prior to the announcement, officials from Cricket Australia visited India to inspect stadiums and assess available infrastructure. They also held discussions with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association regarding the proposed event.
While at the MCG, Prime Minister Modi met several prominent cricket personalities, including former Australian captain Steve Waugh. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and senior Cricket Australia officials were also present.
Hosting a BBL match in India is expected to deepen cricketing cooperation between the two nations while significantly enhancing the league’s global reach, popularity, and commercial opportunities.
