New Delhi: Indian badminton star P. V. Sindhu is not particularly enthusiastic about the new 15-point scoring format approved by the Badminton World Federation (BWF), which is scheduled to be introduced from next year. Sindhu believes the revised system could prove more demanding and exhausting for players.

According to the two-time Olympic medalist, the new format may favor aggressive players, but it is also likely to increase both physical and mental fatigue during matches. Recently, the BWF approved a three-game scoring system with each game played up to 15 points, and the change is expected to take effect on January 4, 2027. Since the announcement, players have been sharing their views on the proposed format.

Sindhu, who was recently appointed Chair of the BWF Athletes’ Commission, has previously stated that many players still consider the existing 21-point system superior in terms of the sport’s appeal, rhythm, and tactical depth.

Speaking in detail about the new scoring structure, Sindhu said, “Yes, I think it benefits aggressive players, but you have to be sharp right from the start. There is no room to gradually settle into the match—you must immediately play with speed and attacking intent.”
