New Delhi: Indian badminton star PV Sindhu is not enthusiastic about the new 15-point scoring format introduced by the Badminton World Federation (BWF), which is scheduled to be implemented from next year. Sindhu believes the revised format will prove to be both exhausting and highly demanding for players.
According to the two-time Olympic medalist, the new system may favor aggressive players, but it could also increase physical and mental fatigue during matches. Recently, the BWF approved a three-game scoring structure with 15 points per game, which is set to come into effect on January 4, 2027. Since the announcement, several players have shared their opinions regarding the change.
Sindhu, who was recently appointed Chair of the BWF Athletes’ Commission, had earlier mentioned that a majority of players still consider the existing 21-point system superior in terms of the sport’s excitement, rhythm, and strategic depth.
Speaking in detail about the new scoring system, Sindhu said, “Yes, I think it benefits aggressive players, but you need to be quick right from the beginning. You cannot take time to settle into the match; you must immediately stay fast and attacking from the start.”
