Costs recovered at 128 toll plazas

New Delhi The Delhi High Court bench comprising Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela has issued a notice to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). The court has sought an explanation from the authority as to why toll collection continues even after the construction costs of certain toll plazas have already been recovered. The next hearing in the matter has been scheduled for January 20, 2026.

The hearing took place in response to a public interest litigation (PIL), which contended that the cost of constructing several national highways and expressways has already been fully recovered, yet tolls continue to be collected, which is unlawful.

The petitioner, Abdul Karim Ansari, informed the High Court that there are 128 such toll plazas across the country where construction costs have been recouped, but toll collection is still being carried out through illegal means.
