Lovlina and Nikhat Expected to Lead India’s Medal Hopes at the Asian Boxing Championships

New Delhi: Olympic medalist Lovlina Borgohain and former world champion Nikhat Zareen will lead a 20-member Indian contingent at the upcoming Asian Boxing Championships, scheduled to be held in Mongolia from March 28 to April 11.

The team has been selected by the Boxing Federation of India through a rigorous selection process. Probable athletes chosen for the championship were part of the ongoing national training camp in Patiala.

The significance of the Asian Championships has increased, as boxers who reach the finals will secure opportunities to compete in the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games.

Lovlina Borgohain will lead the women’s squad in the 75 kg category. The team also includes Preeti in the 54 kg category, who recently won gold in Spain, along with Arundhati Choudhary (70 kg) and Priya (60 kg). Former world champion Minakshi will compete in the 48 kg division, while Jasmine will represent India in the 57 kg category.

In the women’s 51 kg category, Nikhat Zareen will spearhead the campaign. She will be joined by Ankushita Boro (65 kg), Pooja Rani (80 kg), and Alfiya Tarannum Akram Khan Pathan (80 kg).

Ajay Singh, president of the Boxing Federation of India, expressed confidence that the Indian boxers will deliver an impressive performance at the championship.
