New Delhi: Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi, is currently on an official visit to India. During his trip, he is reportedly seeking India’s formal recognition of the Taliban government. The visit is expected to strengthen economic relations and enhance people-to-people ties between the two nations.

Although India has not yet officially recognized the Taliban regime in Kabul, reports indicate that Suhail Shaheen, head of the Taliban’s political office in Qatar, described this as the first high-level visit between the two sides. He emphasized that the visit should be viewed as the beginning of a “new phase” in bilateral relations. Shaheen further stated that both governments should now work to elevate their diplomatic engagement and formally recognize the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan to pave the way for cooperation across various sectors.
