Shimla: In a significant and decisive ruling concerning the ongoing legal dispute over local body elections in Himachal Pradesh, the country’s highest judicial authority has delivered an important judgment. Taking into account the ground realities and the state’s challenging geographical conditions, the Supreme Court has extended the deadline for completing the electoral process until May 31, 2026.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi not only granted administrative relief to the state government but also made sharp observations regarding the repeated interference in the government’s functioning by the Himachal Pradesh High Court. The apex court issued a clear warning that such intrusion into the jurisdiction of an elected government would be treated with seriousness in the future.
