Vacant enclosures to be filled in the new year; plans to bring a male lion and wolves

Gorakhpur: The absence of animals in several enclosures at the Shaheed Ashfaqullah Khan Zoological Park has dampened visitor enthusiasm. In 2025, seven animals—including lions, tigers, and leopards—died. At present, only the lioness Gauri remains in the lion enclosure, while the tiger enclosure houses just Amar and Geeta.

To address this situation, the zoo management has planned to bring in a male lion and wolves. Correspondence has been initiated with zoos in Kanpur, Patna, Lucknow, and Delhi for this purpose. According to the Deputy Director and Chief Wildlife Veterinarian, once the necessary approvals are received, all required procedures will be completed and the new animals will be brought to Gorakhpur. It is expected that visitors will be able to see the new arrivals in the coming year.
