IPL 2025 Suspended for a Week – BCCI Says ‘Nation Comes First’

IPL 2025 suspended: The Indian cricket board (BCCI) confirmed the suspension of the IPL for one week. In a statement, the board said that it would continue to follow the directives of the government and saluted the armed forces for leading the counter-strikes against Pakistan.

In a statement, the BCCI said the decision to suspend the league was taken “after due consultation with all key stakeholders following the representations from most of the franchises, who conveyed the concerns and sentiments of their players, and also the views of the broadcaster, sponsors and fans.”

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed that the 2025 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has been suspended for one week with immediate effect. The decision comes in light of escalating tensions with Pakistan, following the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, where terrorists opened fire on a group of tourists.

“At this critical juncture, the BCCI stands firmly with the nation. We express our solidarity with the Government of India, the Armed Forces and the people of our country. The Board salutes the bravery, courage, and selfless service of our armed forces, whose heroic efforts under Operation Sindoor continue to protect and inspire the nation, as they lead a resolute response to the recent terrorist attack and the unwarranted aggression by Pakistan’s armed forces,” the BCCI said.”While cricket remains a national passion, there is nothing greater than the Nation and its sovereignty, integrity, and security of our country. The BCCI remains firmly committed to support all efforts that safeguard India and will always align its decisions in the best interest of the nation,” it added.

BCCI took the call after the 59th game of the 74-match season on Thursday, May 8 was called-off in Dharamsala midway due to the tensions between India and Pakistan. Players and fans were evacuated from the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Assocation stadium by security officials. A special train was arranged to bring the players and support staff members from Dharamsala to Delhi as the airport in the city was shut.

With IPL 2025 already done with 58 matches out of their 75, it was Gujarat Titans who led the points table till May 9 with 16 points. Along with GT, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians made the top 4 of IPL 2025 untill the suspension was called on Friday.

BCCI THANKS KEY STAKEHOLDERS

The BCCI also thanked broadcasters JioStar and all its stakeholders for helping them take a collective decision.

“The BCCI thanks its key stakeholder – Jiostar, the league’s official broadcaster for their understanding and unwavering support. The Board is also grateful to Title sponsor TATA and all associate partners and stakeholders for coming forward with their unequivocal support for this decision and for putting national interest above all other considerations,” it said.

On Thursday, Pakistan launched missile and drone attacks on multiple regions in India, including Jammu, Rajasthan, and Punjab. India’s defence forces successfully intercepted all threats, preventing major damage and casualties. This escalation followed India’s precision strikes a day earlier on terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, in retaliation for the Pahalgam terror attack.

In response, Pakistan fired a volley of missiles and sent drones across the Line of Control and international borders. India reacted swiftly and effectively, with air defence systems intercepting at least eight missiles and fighter jets shooting down a Pakistani F-16 and possibly two JF-17 aircraft.
