Satya Pal Malik Passes Away at 79: Leaders Across Parties Pay Tribute to Former J&K Governor

New Delhi: His staff reported that Malik had been receiving intensive treatment at Delhi’s Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, where he died at 1:12 PM.

Condolences came in from various political leaders, who remembered Malik for his extensive administrative career and his candid views on key national issues.

Nation Mourns a Fearless Voice

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also recognized Malik’s contributions, calling him a strong advocate for farmers. West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee offered a heartfelt tribute, stating, “I am deeply saddened by the death of Satya Pal Malik ji. He earned respect in Indian politics by speaking uncomfortable truths that many hesitate to say. His support for the farmers’ movement and comments on sensitive issues like Pulwama showed his courage.”

AAP leader and former Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal praised Malik’s bravery:

“Indian politics has lost a rare personality who always spoke the truth, even when it was inconvenient. He stood up for what he believed was right, particularly on issues that affected ordinary people.” He added, “May God grant peace to his soul and provide strength.

A Journey Through High Constitutional Offices

Satya Pal Malik’s political career lasted several decades. He served in both Houses of Parliament and held important positions. He was the last governor of Jammu and Kashmir from August 2018 to October 2019. This period coincided with the revocation of Article 370, which ended the region’s special constitutional status and split it into two Union Territories: J&K and Ladakh.

After his term in Jammu and Kashmir, Malik served as the Governor of Goa from 2019 to 2020 and Meghalaya from 2020 to 2022. Known for his straightforward and often critical comments, Malik continued to attract attention even after leaving office, especially for his strong support of farmers during the protests against the now-repealed farm laws.

Final Moments and Legacy

His close aides confirmed that Malik had been in critical condition in the ICU for a long time. Although he stepped away from active politics in recent years, his legacy as a leader who challenged authority and gave a voice to marginalized communities remains strong.

Satya Pal Malik’s death has created a gap in Indian public life. He is remembered as a man who prioritized the truth over status and never hesitated to speak out, even when it opposed the establishment.
