NCERT adds tales of Manekshaw, Brigadier Usman & Major Somnath to the curriculum.

NCERT has taken a big decision regarding its syllabus. The stories of the heroes who contributed to the country’s army will also be taught in schools now. NCERT has added the stories of the life and sacrifice of brave soldiers Manekshaw, Brigadier Usman, and Major Somnath to its syllabus. The aim of this new syllabus is to connect students with inspirational stories of courage, dedication, and patriotism. Let us tell you that this announcement was made by the Ministry of Defense through a tweet on August 7. The Ministry of Defense announces the inclusion of national heroes in the school curriculum: Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw’s story in Class 8 Urdu, Brigadier Usman’s tale in Class 7 Urdu, and Major Somnath Sharma’s bravery in Class 8 English. The Ministry of Defense believes that this change will not only give children information about the history of India but will also develop courage, empathy, emotional understanding, and a sense of contribution to nation building in them.

Who were these three heroes?

Major Somnath Sharma’s birthdate: January 31, 1923. On 3 November 1947, in the battle of Budgam in Kashmir, at the age of just 25, he sacrificed his life while protecting the Srinagar airport and kept the Kashmir Valley safe. It is because of his bravery that we consider Kashmir safe today. Param Vir Chakra’s inaugural recipient, a distinction held by Major Somnath Sharma. His story will teach children that one should sacrifice even his life for his duty.

Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw: India’s first Field Marshal. People also fondly called him ‘Sam Bahadur.’ He played an important role in five major wars in his life: first, World War II (Indo-Pak War of 1947–48); second, the Indo-China War of 1962; and third, the Indo-Pak War of 1965–1971. Let us remind you that in 2023, a film was made on his life, “Sam Bahadur,” in which Vicky Kaushal played his character. By teaching his story, children will be told how difficulties can be defeated with hard work and courage.

He was martyred on the battlefield on 3 July 1948 in an attempt to take back the Jhangar area of Jammu and Kashmir from the enemies. He made an important contribution in this war without caring for his life. Brigadier Mohammad Usman was called the Lion of Nowshera. By teaching his story, children will be told that a true patriot chooses the country over religion.
