Kolkata Law Student Gang Rape: College Guard Arrested for ‘Negligence and Suspected Involvement’

In a disturbing turn of events, Kolkata Police arrested 55-year-old security guard Pinaki Banerjee, making him the fourth accused in the horrific gang rape case involving a first-year law student at South Calcutta Law College.

Banerjee’s arrest comes shortly after the detention of three key suspects, one of whom is a former student and local Trinamool Congress leader. While police haven’t confirmed his direct involvement in the act itself, they say Banerjee “failed in his duty” to prevent the crime and showed suspicious behavior during questioning.

According to investigators, the guard was present at the college during the incident, as confirmed by CCTV footage, yet he neither intervened nor reported the horrific crime that unfolded on June 25.

“His answers have been inconsistent, and he hasn’t been able to justify why he left his post during a critical time,” a senior officer said. “Whether he acted on someone’s instructions or out of fear—that too is under probe.”

The police are now looking into whether Banerjee was acting alone or was part of a wider cover-up. His silence and inaction, officials suggest, could amount to deliberate negligence or passive complicity.

As the investigation deepens, the entire city remains on edge, demanding swift justice for the young survivor and accountability from those who failed her.
