This fast holds special significance for married women.

There is a religious belief that Mother Parvati did rigorous penance to get Shiva and got him as her husband on the Tritiya Tithi of Bhadrapada Krishna Paksha. On this day, married women do sixteen adornments, like green sarees, green bangles, vermilion, bindi, and mehndi. Then at night, they offer Arghya to the moon and pray for a happy married life.
