The roles of two ministers of the LDF government should also be probed: V.K. muralitharan
New Delhi. Union Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar on Thursday sought a report from the authorities on the issue of alleged illegal felling and smuggling of rosewood trees from forests in Kerala’s Wayanad district. Minister of State for External Affairs V. Muraleedharan told this to reporters in the national capital after meeting Javadekar in this matter. Muraleedharan, who hails from Kerala, said the Union Environment Minister has sought a report from the authorities based on his complaint.
According to the complaint, the accused have cut rosewood wood worth crores of rupees from the forests of Kerala. He alleged that these trees were looted under the guise of an order issued by the state government last year. Demanding a detailed inquiry into the incident, Muraleedharan said the said order was issued in full knowledge of the political leadership of the ruling LDF in the state. The roles of the two ministers of the previous LDF government should also be probed, he said. The Congress-led opposition UDF on Tuesday raised the issue in the Assembly and accused the state’s Left government of shielding the accused. The state government on Wednesday told the Kerala High Court that the mafia was involved in the felling of trees and what the probe revealed was very minor as compared to the actual problem.
