After launching 8 trains connecting different cities of the country on Sunday with the Statue of Unity, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given a big gift to two cities of Gujarat today. PM Modi on Monday also laid the foundation stone of Surat Metro Rail Project and Phase-2 of Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani and Union Urban Development Minister Hardeepsinh Puri were present on the occasion. While laying the foundation stone of the metro rail project, PM Modi said that the metro connectivity will be strengthened in the two big business centers of the country, Ahmedabad and Surat. Today more than 17000 crore infrastructure work is being started. This shows that even in the Corona era, the construction of new infrastructure is going on continuously. He said that in the first 10–12 years before 2014, only 225 km of metro lines were in operation. Whereas more than 450 km of metro network has been operationalized in the last 6 years. PM Modi said that today Surat is the eighth city in the country in terms of population and the fourth fastest growing city in the world. 9 out of every 10 diamonds in the world are carved in Surat. Surat is the second cleanest city in the country today. PM Modi said that most of us would have also seen the period in which water was transported by trains and tankers to the villages of Gujarat. But now water has reached every village of Gujarat. Water is available in 80 percent of the state’s houses through drains.
The total cost of the Surat Metro Rail Project is Rs 12020 crore and its length will be 40.35 km. The length of the first corridor will be 21.61 km and the second will be 18.74 km. The first corridor will be from Sarthana to Dream City, which will have 14 elevated metro stations and 6 underground stations. While the second corridor will be from Bhesan to Saroli, which will have 18 elevated stations. At present, 9.88 km corridor will be given priority to Dream City Depot Kadarsha Nal, which will have 10 elevated metro stations. The second phase of the Ahmedabad metro project will have two corridors, the length of which will be 28.25 km. The first 22.83 km long corridor will be built from Motera Stadium to Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar. While the second 5.41 km long corridor will be constructed from GNLU to Gift City. The second phase of Ahmedabad Metro will cost a total of Rs 5384.17 crore.
